Football Programs

1917 West Virginia Wesleyan University versus West Virginia University West Virginia State Championship Game Program with Greasy Neale and Pete Calac featured.  The WV Wesleyan squad featured 2 football legends.  The first was player/coach Earl Greasy Neale who later earned his legendary status as Philadelphia Eagles Coach, as well as playing against the Black Sox with the Reds in the 1919 World series.  The other is Pete Calac, who was a former Carlisle Indian School Star who went on to be a teammate of Jim Thorpe with the Canton Bulldogs, Oorang Indians, etc.  Interestingly, while playing with West Virginia Wesleyan, Greasey Neale, Calac and player/coach (and later Eagles coach) John Kellison secretly played professionally with the Canton Bulldogs under the fake names Foster, Ketchum, and Anderson; to maintain their amateur status.  The program measures 12 by 8 inches, is in very nice condition, and has several photos within.  This attractive early football program is a great piece of pigskin history.

1926 Red Grange's New York Yankees versus the Boston Bulldogs AFL Football Program.  The game was played November 14th 1926 at Yankee Stadium.  This program hails from the one season of the American Football League that was initiated by Red Grange and C.C. Pyle after a contractual dispute with the Chicago Bears, and being denied a New York franchise by the NFL.  The program features a great image of Grange on its cover, and has individual photos from players of both teams within the interior.  The program is in nice shape, but does have a fold crease down its center.  The lineup and scoring pages feature neat inked notations like: Grange outstanding star - 2 runs from 1/2 field for touchdowns - Intercepted pass.  The scoring page has Grange's 77 shown scoring 3 touchdowns, with the Yankees winning 27 to 0.  One of the neater football programs I've handled.

1921 Union A.A. of Phoenixville versus Holmesburg Philadelphia area Pro Football Lineup Card.  This game featured two of the juggernauts of Philadelphia Pro Football; teams that competed with the best in the nation.  The year prior the Union AA squad featured Football Legend Fritz Pollard, and after beating the Canton Bulldogs in 1920, declared themselves United States Pro Football Champions.  They were still a powerhouse club in 1921, playing the Frankford Yellowjackets to a 14 to 14 tie.  Holmesburg was an equally good pro football team, coming off of being the Philadelphia Pro Football Champions in 1919 and 1920.  Holmesburg themselves tied and the Yellowjackets in 1920, and lost to them 3-2 in 1921.  The lineup card is not in perfect condition, missing some paper along its left margin, but even with this issue this scarce piece of early pro football history would be a great addition to any collection.

1924 Clifton Heights AC versus Holmesburg Philadelphia area Pro Football Lineup Card and ticket.  This game featured two of the juggernauts of Philadelphia Pro Football, and both teams contained players that went onto play in the NFL (for example Lehecka and Potts played for the Frankford Yellowjackets)   Holmesburg was a very good pro football team, coming off of being the Philadelphia Pro Football Champions in 1919 and 1920, and the lineup card denotes them as the Independent Champions of Philadelphia.  Both of the squads competed with the best football teams of the time, including the Frankford Yellowjackets.  The lineup card features the rosters of each team, as well as advertising on its reverse.  Great piece of early Philadelphia pro football history.

1927 Clifton Heights AC versus the Millville Big Blue Pro Football Lineup and Ticket.  Millville was a powerhouse pro football team of the New Jersey area, and the year prior the team fielded NFL legends 2-Bits Homan and Guy Chamberlain.  In 1926 the Millville Big Blue team traveled to Florida to play an exhibition football game versus the St Petersburg Cardinals (also known as the Tampa Cardinals); the Cardinals featured Native American legendary players Jim Thorpe and Pete Calac.  Clifton Heights was an equally formidable Philadelphia area team that competed with the Frankford Yellowjackets.  Rare early pro football lineup card and ticket.

1920 Holmesburg Football Club Banquet Program with actual silver gelatin team photograph mounted on its cover.  The program is 8 pages long and features the roster and schedules for both the main Holmesburg team as well as their 2nd or Reserves team.  Holmesburg was a powerhouse in Philadelphia are football, and is denoted in gold text on the cover, they were the Champions of Philadelphia in 1920.  Neat early piece of early professional football ephemera.

1924 Clifton Heights AC versus Victrix AA Philadelphia area Pro Football Lineup Card/Program with 3 tickets.  The front of the lineup card lists the early NFL star Heinie Miller as the Clifton Heights team Coach.  Heinie Miller played for early NFL and Pro teams including the Frankford Yellowjackets, Buffalo All-Americans, the Union AA Club, and the Milwaukee Badgers.  Clifton Heights and Victrix were a couple of the better Philadelphia area pro teams,  and competed with the best the area had to offer like the Frankford Yellowjackets and Holmesburg.
